Setting up the room…

What you will learn

  • Which router port the modem uses (WAN) and which ports your own devices use (LAN).
  • How your NAS gets its address from the router (DHCP), and what a 169.254.x.x address means.
  • The difference between RAID 0 and RAID 1, and why RAID is not a backup.
  • How to find your NAS on the home network and run a first backup.

Key terms

WAN is the router port that faces your internet provider. LAN ports connect the devices in your home.

DHCP is how the router hands out addresses such as 192.168.1.50. A device that gets no answer gives itself a 169.254.x.x (link-local) address, which usually means it is not really connected.

RAID 1 copies every file to two drives, so the NAS keeps working if one drive fails. RAID 0 splits files across both drives for more space and speed, with no protection.

The 3-2-1 rule: keep 3 copies of important data, on 2 kinds of storage, with 1 copy somewhere else.
